Park Place Racing Update: Le Mans Winner Campbell Joins Park Place for Rolex 24

Park Place Motorsports adds Porsche Young Professional and Le Mans winner Matt Campbell to its Rolex 24 At Daytona lineup that includes Patrick Lindsey, Patrick Long and Nick Boulle running the No. 73 Porsche GT3 R.

Campbell, Australia, became part of the Porsche Factory Driver lineup in 2017 as a Porsche Junior. In his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Campbell took home Porsche’s 107thclass win with Dempsey Proton Racing in the GTE-Am category. The Rolex 24 At Daytona will be Campbell’s shot to prove it was talent, not luck that earned him a trophy on the world’s largest stage for endurance racing.

Of course, his pedigree of winning championship after championship should be enough to impress any critic. He has won a championship every year since 2011. Campbell won the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, 2015 Australian GT Championship, 2014 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia (B Class), 2014 Australian GT Championship, 2012 Queensland Formula Ford Championship and is a two-time winner of the Queensland Super Sprint Series (2013 and 2011).

Park Place Motorsports warmly welcomes Campbell’s talent and fight. A GT Daytona win at Daytona International Speedway has long eluded the No. 73 Park Place Porsche. This years’ effort seems as poised as any with the return of Porsche Factory Driver Patrick Long and the addition of the all-new Porsche 911 GT3 R. Long and teammate Nick Boulle will be on standby to give tips on how to charm the Daytona International Speedway. Long won the race in 2009 and Boulle more recently in 2017.

Team Principal Patrick Lindsey, on the other hand, is willing to take tips from Campbell.

“He’s so young but has already seen so much success,” Lindsey said. “It is honestly impressive. I can’t wait to sit back and watch him work. I’ll actually root for him this time, at Le Mans I ran against him so I couldn’t be too impressed. I know I have more experience at Daytona but I’m wanting a little Campbell sheen to rub off on me. He’s really talented and successful, I’d love to have his resume. I really hope for the best so we can add to that resume and he can go home with a Rolex.”

The Roar Before the Rolex 24 is Campbell’s first trip to the United States, making Daytona his first foray into North American racing.

“I’m very much looking forward to my first trip to the United States,” Campbell said. “I’ve driven on banking before but certainly not to the extent of the Daytona banking, so I’m sure it will be quite the eye-opener for the first time.

“To get my first Daytona under my belt is certainly invaluable, I think in endurance racing no matter of your results in the past, each 24-hour race is a new challenge. But I feel like I’ve gained great experience in the last year with endurance racing and my approach going into such races. I’m excited to work with the team. I come in with an open mind having enjoyed working with Longy in previous years.”

Campbell will be available for interview upon request at the Roar Before the Rolex 24. Park Place Motorsports prepares for the start of the 2019 season Jan. 4-6 at Daytona International Speedways as part of the test weekend. The season kicks off with the Rolex 24 At Daytona Jan. 26-27, broadcast live on NBC. For schedule, details visit http://imsa.com or visit http://parkplacemotorsports.com for more team information.

McLaren Automotive Introduces the New 720s Spider

Revealed online earlier this month (and available to order immediately), the new 720s Spider combines the thrill of open-air driving with unparalleled Super Series dynamic performance and sophistication.

“The new McLaren 720S Spider offers an unparalleled blend of extreme performance, crafted luxury, driver involvement and daily usability – all with the additional exhilaration of open-air driving whenever required. As the most accomplished convertible supercar ever, the new Spider delivers across a remarkable spectrum of abilities to outstandingly high levels, and as lightest in class with an increase of just 108lbs over the 720S Coupé, moves us even further ahead of our competition in the weight race.”- Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive

McLaren’s engineering ingenuity, underpinned by the inherent strength and rigidity of carbon fibre, means that despite the removal of the fixed roof there is no need for additional strengthening; even the unusually slim but incredibly strong windscreen A-pillars first seen on the 720S Coupé remain. To provide enhanced rollover protection for occupants, fixed carbon fibre structural supports are integrated into the rear of the Monocage II-S, additionally providing the main anchor points for the roof system and the seatbelts. In the first-generation Super Series, steel supports featured and the switch to carbon fibre has contributed to the Rollover Protection Structure (ROPS) in the 720S Spider being 15lbs lighter than in the 650S.

Overall, the new 720S Spider is just 108lbs – or less than 4% – heavier than the 720S Coupé. The increased weight is primarily associated with the RHT and tonneau system. With a lightest dry weight of 2,937lbs, the 720S Spider is comfortably the lightest car in its competitive set, at 194lbs less than the 3,131lbs dry weight of its closest rival. The low weight is the foundation for the dynamic, performance and efficiency benefits that McLaren is so adept at exploiting for the greater enjoyment of its customers.

The canopy-like design of the 720S Coupé is recognized for the sense of 360-degree vision it provides, allowing light to flood into the cabin and setting a new benchmark for visibility. This philosophy of unrivalled vision is central to the second-generation Super Series and the new Spider moves the game on again, with unique, glazed flying buttresses further aiding driver visibility as well as adding visual drama to the car.

The leading edge of the buttress features an aerodynamic carrier to guide airflow, before dramatically tapering off to expose darkened glazing; the design and the use of glass delivers a 12% improvement in over-the-shoulder visibility compared to the previous McLaren Super Series Spider.

Power and Performance: Nothing Shorting of Phenomenal

Acceleration is nothing short of phenomenal, with 0-60mph covered in 2.8 seconds and 0-124mph achieved in just 7.9 seconds – just 0.1 seconds off the pace of the Coupé. The standing quarter mile sprint is dispatched in 10.4 seconds – again, only 0.1 seconds slower than the Coupé – and where conditions allow, the 720S Spider will continue accelerating to a Coupé-matching top speed of 212mph with the roof raised. Even with the roof lowered, maximum speed remains extraordinary at 202mph. The minor variations in performance arise from differing aerodynamics and the additional 108lbs the Spider carries.

Retractable Hard Top

The Retractable Hard Top (RHT) of the 720S Spider is a completely new design, with a one-piece, carbon fibre roof panel as standard. The hardtop maintains the distinctive silhouette and aerodynamic purity of the 720S Coupé and provides a full carbon fibre upper structure when the roof is closed. The folding mechanism for McLaren’s new RHT is electrically rather than hydraulically driven and the system is the fastest-operating convertible roof in the supercar class, with the retractable hard top lowered or raised in just 11 seconds – six seconds quicker than the 650S Spider. The combination of e-motors and the strength and light weight of the carbon fibre RHT enables a maximum vehicle speed during operation of 31mph – a significant increase from the 18.5mph of the 650S. With these performance statistics, it is no surprise that McLaren has registered three worldwide patents for the roof system.

The active rear spoiler, which automatically activates to either decrease drag or increase downforce and can also act as an airbrake to enhance vehicle balance under heavy braking, can rise at lower speeds and to a higher position overall in the Spider application, optimizing downforce and balance to ensure that performance and driver engagement is on par with the 720S Coupé. And while the rear spoiler is identical on both Coupé and Spider, the deployment mapping is bespoke to each body style, the aero settings differing depending on whether the Retractable Hard Top is raised or lowered and the vehicle electronics being automatically aware of which condition it is in.

Three specifications, two new exterior colors, return of one heritage color

The new 720S Spider is available in the same three specifications as the Coupé, with Performance and Luxury trims extending above the standard model. Two new exterior colors – Belize Blue and Aztec Gold – have been introduced for the new Spider among a palette of 23, one of which is Supernova Silver, a Heritage color that was first available on the McLaren 12C.

The McLaren 720S has established a reputation in Coupé guise for its ground-breaking design, cutting-edge technologies and ferocious pace, complemented by a breadth of ability and sophistication that delivers everyday usability belying its extreme performance status. Available for order now. Contact McLaren Dallas for details.

All-Stars Visit Park Place Premier Collection for After School Experience

After School All Stars provides children with comprehensive after-school programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and life. Heath Strayhan, General Manager at Park Place Premier Collection, is also an Advisory Board Member for After-School All Stars because of the program’s impact on kids in the community:

“In the middle school age group, these children are exposed to many negative influences between the hours of 3 and 6 during the week because they are often home along. ASAS not only occupies their time, but maximizes it by teaching life sills and exposing them to career choice possibilities they did not know existed.

So, when a need for a new after school excursion came up, Heath didn’t hesitate to step up and offer experiencing some our most premier level vehicles and the opportunity to learn about the various careers in automotive.

“It’s a perfect fit. We decided that, as opposed to me speaking at a school, we would immerse them in our dealership environment and introduce them to people who have taken advantage of career opportunities  that are available.  I also love an excuse to give out free cookies and hot chocolate,” said Strayhan.

The day began with the children arriving at the Premier Collection Service Center off Northwest Highway, where they were able tour the client lounge and get a sneak peek at some our high-performance supercars in the front showroom.

Afterwards, they met with Assistant Service Manager, Sharon Stanley, who explained how integral her role is in ensuring a great client experience.  Sharon’s role is to connect the dots between our parts department, Service Technicians, and valuable clients.

Afterwards, the kids ventured into our McLaren, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Maserati workshops, where they witnessed technicians performing repairs, live.  To top it all off, the group of All-Stars also were shown a few of Mr. Earl’s (one of the Premier Technicians) favorite tools, which became a hit with the group.

While walking through each service bay, a few of the kids mentioned how cool it would be to work at Park Place and get to work around such cool cars- and as you can imagine, that just warmed the hearts of our Park Place team members who had the chance to share their story.

Before heading over to the New Car Showroom off Lemmon Avenue,  the AS-AS group had the opportunity to meet our Inventory Control Specialist, Niki, who actually received her full-time job after interning with Park Place in High School. Her story is especially meaningful to these kids and was General Manager Heath’s favorite part of the day too:

“My favorite Part of the Day was when Niki told the group a little about her history, how she came to work for us through the internship program, and how vital and important her role is in our organization.”

Fast forward to a small bus trip to the Lemmon Avenue Dealership, the kids were greeted with fresh hot chocolate and cookies to refresh the students before learning all about our premier brands.  Malcolm Gage, our New Car Sales Director, ended the day with a short quiz, asking questions like “Where are Bentley’s made?” and let’s just say there wasn’t a shortage of hand raising during this Q&A session.

Tori Schwarzlose, Program Manager at After-School All-Stars shared how important these experiences are to the AS-AS kids:

“Our All-Stars had so much fun learning about new cars and seeing the showroom, but the most impactful part of the field trip was meeting the incredible people that work at Park Place. Each employee got to share about their unique role within Park Place, and it helped expose our All-Stars to career and education paths that they wouldn’t otherwise know. We couldn’t do this work alone, so we are very grateful for our new friends at Park Place and the amazing experience they provided our students!”

Volvo’s Vision for the Future of Travel: the 360c Concept

Imagine a fully mobile work space that not only made your commute hassle free, but let you actually work or relax while going from point A to point B. Imagine if this fully functional work space could eventually be offered by employers or even on subscription basis.

Sounds too good to be true, right? Well not for Volvo Cars who’s mission makes the automotive experience easier and more enjoyable for drivers and passengers alike. Much of this can attributed to their overall design approach, putting the human before any technology advances or upgrades- ensuring it’s executed in a way to positively influence an experience, rather than merely stay up-to-date for the sake of well, staying up-to-date.

Volvo Cars released the 360c Autonomous Concept earlier this fall as a tangible view of the company’s vision for the future of travel. The concept itself reflects the ever-changing structure and design by which people live, something any retailer or automotive manufacturer alike can struggle to achieve.  By transforming unproductive or boring commutes into useful and enjoyable minutes (or hours) on the road, then yes, Volvo Cars has the ability to possibly transform the well-being of their riders with four scenarios built in: sleeping space, mobile office, living room, and entertainment space.

“The 360c explores what becomes possible when we remove the human driver, using new freedoms in design and recapturing time – it’s a glimpse at how autonomous drive technology will change the world as we know it. The possibilities are mind-boggling,” said Mårten Levenstam, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Volvo Cars.

Fully autonomous and electric travel offers a range of advanced safety and environmental benefits, such as less pollution, less traffic congestion, and related health and lifestyle advantages for those living in cities. It also opens up possibilities for more residential freedom, reduced pressure on real estate pricing and more affordable home ownership.

“People becoming less reliant on proximity to cities is just one example of the impact of removing the burden of unproductive travel time,” said Mårten Levenstam. “The 360c driving office makes it viable for people to live at greater distances from crowded cities and use their time both in a more pleasant and more effective way.”

The 360c is based on a fully autonomous, electric car without a human driver. It reimagines how people travel, how they engage with friends, family and contacts, and how they can recapture time while travelling.

This is just the start, but Volvo Cars President comments this design concept is just the conversation starter as more ideas and answers make their way to the Volvo team of engineers and designers.

“It will have a profound impact on how people travel, how we design our cities and how we use infrastructure. But we are just one of many stakeholders, so we expect and invite a broad discussion as society learns how to make the most of this revolutionary technology.” – Marten Levenstam

New LF-1 Limitless Lexus Concept Makes Debut

The Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept vehicle makes its New York City debut at the newly opened INTERSECT BY LEXUS. It will remain on display through Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019. The Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept, which made its global debut at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, introduces a new genre of luxury vehicle: the flagship crossover.

Combining high performance with unrestrained luxury, the Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept is a showcase of technology, innovation and the latest evolution of design at Lexus.

Visitors to INTERSECT BY LEXUS – NYC, a unique brand and cultural space, will have a front-row view to the luxury crossover concept vehicle.  Following successful launches in Tokyo and Dubai, INTERSECT BY LEXUS – NYC resides in the heart of the city’s vibrant Meatpacking District and continues the brand’s commitment to supporting innovation on a local, national and global level.

“We’re thrilled to introduce the Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept vehicle to guests of INTERSECT. The LF-1 Limitless concept is our vision of a new kind of flagship vehicle that incorporates imaginative technology while creating a strong emotional connection,” said Kirk Edmondson, general manager of INTERSECT BY LEXUS – NYC. “Showcasing the vehicle in New York is a natural choice, as INTERSECT will deliver creative, exceptional moments to the city and beyond just as this concept vehicle delivers limitless possibilities.”

The innovative spirit of the Lexus LF-1 Limitless was created at CALTY Design Research in California.

The design language is rooted in the simple, yet elegant design concept dubbed “molten katana.” Like molten metal being forged into a fine Japanese sword, the lines of the Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept have the potential to shape the future of a flagship crossover for Lexus. Imagining that shift from a smooth, flowing mass into a solid chiseled shape formed the basis for the fluid, yet aggressive design of the LF-1 Limitless. The concept’s exaggerated dash-to-axle ratio gives it an athletic profile that’s more sports car than station wagon. Combined with a cabin that sits deep within the rear-wheel drive chassis and aggressive 22-inch wheels barely contained under bulging fenders, the LF-1 has a powerful stance that conveys its performance intentions at a glance. Like all current Lexus models, the spindle grille on the LF-1 is a core element to the overall design. The grille itself features a three-dimensional design with colors developed in-house by CALTY.

INTERSECT BY LEXUS – NYC is located at 412 West 14th Street New York, New York 10014. Starting in January 2019, the restaurant will serve lunch seven days a week from 11:30-3PM. Dinner will be available Sunday-Wednesday from 5PM-10PM and Thursday-Saturday from 5PM-11PM.  The café is open from 7AM-7PM seven days a week. The New Porsche 911 Receives An Upgraded Digital Experience

Porsche premiered the new (and still iconic as ever) 911 at the L.A. Autoshow.  Sporting an unmistakable Porsche design, the new 911 features a more muscular look and a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor. In addition to body and styling adjustments, this new 911 features some impressive digital upgrades to truly embrace how the client and driver experience is changing and becoming more digital than ever before.

A Brief Overview

Overall, the drive efficiency has improved thanks to a revised injection process and a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system, according to Porsche’s November 28th Press Release.  The Porsche Power and Performance is delivered by a newly developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, accented with new assistance systems to make drives safer and even more effortless with help from the Porsche Road Trip App.

Digital Innovations for a Curated Client Experience

Some of the newest innovations for the sportscar manufacturer are found in the digital details of the 911, including the Road Trip app mentioned previously.

  1. Porsche Road Trip: This app brings back the nostalgia of summer road trips but in an amped-up fashion. Porsche Road Trip supports car enthusiasts in planning, organizing, and navigating special trips. Create completely unique experiences with curated routes, exclusive hotel, and restaurant accommodations, and key points of interest as you make your way along the road.
  2. Porsche 360+: Allows the client to enjoy the Porsche experience away from the vehicle. How? According to Porsche, the heart of this program is the lifestyle assistance for clients. The assistant’s purpose? To make your everyday life easier.
  3. Porsche Impact: measures and calculates emissions. With the new design, the new 911 decreases its emissions, so this new digital upgrade is a consistent feature with Porsche’s mechanical enhancements. The Porsche Impact measures the financial contributions that Porsche clients pay to offset their CO2 footprint.  The programs are open to the client to choose and are spread all over the world with focuses on wind, hydro, solar power, and forest protection.
