McLaren Dallas and The Macallan Celebrate Renowned Poet’s Birthday

On January 25, McLaren Dallas and The Macallan Scotch celebrated renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns’ birthday with Scotch tastings and Haggis in the French Room Bar at The Adolphus in downtown Dallas.

While Burns, Scotland’s best known and most beloved poet, died in 1796 at the age of 37, he is still remembered worldwide on his birthday with traditional Scottish food, drink, and poetry. Burns is probably best known in the U.S. for the New Year’s Eve anthem “Auld Lang Syne,” the second most sung song in our country after “Happy Birthday.”

The Mcallan Scotch at the Adolphus Hotel in Downtown Dallas

The Macallan national brand ambassador Raquel Raies introduced guests to the 1824 Masters Series, four different whiskeys increasing in scarcity and rarity through each expression. The tastings began with a 12-year-old Double Cask, then a 12-year-old Sherry Oak, followed by a 15-year-old Fine Oak, then finishing with the exquisite Rare Cask, handpicked from less than one-percent of the finest sherry-seasoned casks in The Macallan reserves.

As the tasting progressed, a bagpiper heralded the arrival of the Haggis, Scotland’s national dish. Ms. Raies addressed the Haggis with a dramatic reading of Burn’s traditional poem, before the theatrical cutting of the Haggis with a ceremonial knife.

Haggis is not for the squeamish, but it is very flavorful.  It consists of a lamb or sheep’s organs minced with suet, onions, oatmeal, and seasonings and cooked in the animal’s stomach. Served with the traditional sides of “neeps and tatties” (turnips and potatoes) with a dram of Scotch, it was a fitting conclusion to an evening befitting a Scottish legend.

As Burns concluded in his “Address to a Haggis” (in a rough English translation):

You powers, who make mankind your care,

And dish them out their bill of fare,

Old Scotland wants no watery stuff,

That splashes in small wooden dishes;

But if you wish her grateful prayer,

Give her [Scotland] a Haggis!

Bugatti Dallas Delivers First $3.2 Million Chiron In Texas

There are plenty of stories about guys who treat their magnificent machines as their significant other. But this is more than just one man’s love for his car. This is about a father’s love for his son, and the son expressing his love back to his father. And what better way to express that deep affection than the gift of a handcrafted $3.2 million Bugatti Chiron?

Mayur Shree, a 32-year-old Dallas real estate investor, came to the U.S. from South Africa in 2012 at his father’s urging. He credits his father, Pran, with his success and gave him the Chiron as a token of his appreciation.

“I grew up watching videos and television programs with my father that showcased exotic cars,” explained Mayur. “We especially loved the Bugattis. I worked with Bugatti Dallas to build the perfect car for my father.”

Bugatti Dallas, part of the Park Place Premier Collection, and Absolut Elyx recently hosted a soiree at the Residences at the Stoneleigh to celebrate the delivery of the first Bugatti

Mayur Shree and his father Pran Shree

Chiron in Texas.  Guests enjoyed a specialty cocktail (the Mayur Mule) crafted by Absolut Elyx in the beautiful Art Deco-inspired Resident Club and Screening Room. Meanwhile, the Chiron drew an admiring crowd on the Residences at the Stoneleigh’s porte-cochere.

Mayur’s one-of-a-kind Chiron took two years from the time he put down a deposit and started configuring it until its delivery. Heath Strayhan, Park Place Premier Collection General Manager, joked at the party that the final product was about the 12th iteration of Mayur’s vision. It had to be just right.

Named after 1930s Bugatti driver Louis Chiron, the two-seater is what Bugatti calls “the world’s most powerful, fastest, most luxurious, and most exclusive super sports car.”  The French automaker will only make 500 worldwide over the next several years. Each will be a one-of-one original. There are currently less than 20 Chirons in North America. And only one in Texas.

The beautiful beast features an 8.0-liter, quad-turbo, W-16 engine, cranking out an astounding 1500 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque. With a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sending power to all four wheels, it rockets from 0-to-60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds… 124 mph in under 6.5 seconds… and 0-to-186 mph in less than 13.6 seconds. Bugatti limits the Chiron’s top speed to 261 mph on the street for obvious safety reasons. But a special “track key” can increase the top end by another 20 mph or so on the track…but only after the car performs a complete systems analysis down to the precise pressure in each tire and a thorough engine and drivetrain evaluation.

“While everyone wants to talk about how fast the car is,” says Mayur, “the ride is incredible even at 60 mph. My father and I took a drive around Dallas the other day and it was very smooth and pleasant. But you knew there was a beast right behind your head that was ready to be unleashed.”

Putting Power To The Ground: Drivetrain Options In Your Luxury Vehicle

We’ve explored your engine options in luxury vehicles, and even how those engines make power in our Engines 101 series, but today we are going to talk about how you get that power to the ground (aka the drivetrain). Whether you like to row through the gears, slap a paddle, or let the car do the work for you, we’ve got you covered.

Starting with the old standby, you actually won’t find many Manual transmission luxury cars these days outside of select performance models like certain Porsche coupes. If you aren’t familiar with how a manual transmission works, the concept is pretty simple, so we’ll start with a primer here.

Manual Transmission:

On a manual transmission vehicle, you’ll find a third pedal in the driver footwell that may be a little confusing until you get used to it. This is the clutch pedal which, as its name implies, engages and disengages the clutch. This means that it can disconnect the engine’s power from the transmission temporarily, in order to free the gears to shift as needed. With the clutch pedal pressed, you will simply use the shift knob in the center console to select your desired gear, then release the clutch pedal to transfer power back to the transmission. There are certainly some nuances that we didn’t cover in that process, but hopefully, you get the idea. Even if they aren’t as popular now as they once were, you will still find some automotive purists carrying the torch for a more engaged driving experience.

Automatic Transmission:

Next, in line, we have the Automatic Transmission. As technology has advanced, automatic transmissions have begun to provide better fuel efficiency, less complicated vehicle operation, and yes, in some cases even faster times than their manual counterparts.

The automatic transmission helped make motoring more inclusive than ever and it continues to be the most widely available transmission in the American market. In most cases, replacing the clutch with what is called torque converter which removes the need for the clutch pedal by automatically disconnecting engine power when the engine slows and the vehicle stops. Gear shifts are performed by the transmission itself via several automatic clutches and requires no additional input from the driver.

Paddle Shifters:

You may, however, opt for a model with paddle shifters that allows for the occasional manual-ish driving experience, and here’s where we enter a bit of a grey area. Among some high-performance models, you’ll find transmissions that blur the line between manual and automatic.

Using similar gearing designs to manual transmissions but with an electronic clutch, you’ll find a sequential gearbox like those in McLaren vehicles provide a different characteristic to driving that still allows for automatic operation, but is also excellently suited for a spirited track day where you may enjoy doing your own gear selection.

Double Clutch Transmission:

Another take on this concept brings you to the double-clutch transmission, which performs similarly to the sequential gearbox above, but with a major difference. A double-clutch transmission like the Porsche Doppelkupplung Getriebe (don’t worry, you can just call it the Porsche PDK) actually uses two clutches, disconnecting and engaging power to separate areas of the transmission simultaneously, allowing faster gear changes for the most discerning track day enthusiast.

Continuously Variable Transmission:

Lastly, at least for now, you will find some vehicles equipped with what is called a Continuously Variable Transmission(CVT). This type of transmission is most often reserved for economy focused, or hybrid,  models where fuel efficiency and a smooth drive are of the utmost priority. Utilizing a strong belt and adjustable pulleys, the CVT has an almost magical ability to maintain an ideal engine speed while adjusting the transmission ratio to make the most efficient use of your engine’s power. You may be surprised by the feeling of accelerating without any noticeable “shifting”, but it’s a sensation that feels simply luxurious.

A Model of Distinction: The 2018 Lexus RX Is Almost Here

The fourth generation RX, debuting in this year, is a true show stopper and the newest must-have in the 2018 Lexus Line up in terms of reliability, versatility, and detailed styling.

While the Lexus RX has always offered an ideal combination of SUV versatility and luxury sedan-like comfort, this repeatedly best-seller stands out in the segment with a dramatic mix of sharp creases and curves. The focal point of the front is the Lexus signature spindle grille, set off by an elegant chrome-plated surround and standard Bi-LED headlights.
The spindle theme repeats at the rear, where L-shaped LED taillights envelop the tailgate and wrap into the rear fenders. Capping off the design, quite literally, is a floating-roof effect created by elegantly blacked-out C-pillars. Where the rubber meets the road, there’s a choice of three 20-inch wheel design which perfectly accents the eleven, scratch resistant, self-restoring paint colors.

Park Place Lexus is ready to assist you in choosing your 2018 Lexus RX- simply fill out the pre-order form here and one of our experts will reach back out to you.

Impeccable Cabin Design and Luxury

The RX cabin is designed with impeccable details, including the satin brushed-aluminum trim (F SPORT only), form-fitting seats, and the available richly finished wood trim (Premium and Luxury Packages) that curves gently up from the center console toward the glove box. The RX interior speaks luxury with impeccable details including form-fitting seats, rich wood trim for Luxury and Premium packages, and a subtle satin brushed aluminum trim on the F SPORT only.  The spacious cabin seats five in the RX models, providing a position comparable to that in the Lexus LS flagship luxury sedan. Past the back seats, is ample room for up to four large suitcases or multiple golf bags, providing passengers with versatility without sacrifice. An available full-color Heads-Up Display (HUD) incorporated into the design of the instrument panel can project key information on the windshield to help the driver focus on the road ahead.

Your Options:

RX 350: V6
The Lexus RX 350 will continue to offer its most powerful V6 engine with 295 hp and 268 lb.-ft. of torque. The 3.5-liter engine’s D-4S fuel injection system combines direct and port fuel injection systems.

FWD or AWD
The Lexus RX 350 offers the choice between front-wheel drive and Dynamic Torque Control AWD. Under normal cruising conditions, this advanced system engages front-wheel drive to help reduce fuel consumption. Dynamic Torque Control automatically shifts to AWD when accelerating to help prevent front-wheel slippage, or when sensors detect wheel slippage.

RX 450h Hybrid: The Most Powerful RX
More than a decade ago, Lexus introduced the world’s premier luxury hybrid vehicle- a gas/electric version of the RX luxury-utility vehicle. The RX 450h continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the brand’s hybrid leadership, with 308 combined system horsepower for powerful performance (3.5-liter V6 engine) and impressive 30 mpg combined EPA-estimated fuel economy.

A Dynamic Ride and Precise Handling Capabilities

Drive Mode Select
Drivers can exert more control over the RX by choosing from several driving modes. Normal provides an ideal everyday balance of performance and energy conservation. Sport puts an edge on powertrain responsiveness, and Eco mode operates the powertrain at its most efficient level. For the RX 450 fourth mode, EV, enables electric power at lower speeds for short distances. “SPORT S” mode enhances throttle response and acceleration feel while also sharpening the feel of the EPS system. Upgrade to the F SPORT package to receive “SPORT S+” to activate a firmer suspension setting for flatter cornering.

If you are in the market for a customized driving experience, you can create a unique driving mode by combining powertrain and chassis settings (CUSTOMIZE mode available for F SPORT).

F SPORT

Transform your cabin by choosing the F SPORT models and receive an intensified exterior with an exclusive blackout mesh grille, lower spoiler section, and satin finish chrome-plated lower protector. Black side mirrors match the grille, and exclusive 20-inch 10-spoke aluminum alloy wheels and subtle but distinctive F SPORT badging round out the expressive exterior.

Inspired by the Lexus LFA supercar, the driver experiences an 8 inch LCD instrument cluster, which artistically combines a tachometer and digital speed indicator with real-time information to intensify your Lexus driving experience in a subtle and technology-based way. The screen provides information such as G-force metrics, navigation information, torque distribution, and more.

A Full Circle Sensory Experience

Multimedia Powerhouse
From powerful audio to cutting-edge displays, the multimedia available for the Lexus RX models covers all needs. The standard Display Audio system includes an eight-inch screen, HD Radio™, Scout GPS Link, Bluetooth® audio, voice recognition, an auxiliary mini jack, two USB ports and nine speakers for the RX 350 and for the RX 450h. The driver will find frequently used switches placed close at hand for convenience. Upgrade your driver to 450h and receive a 12-speaker premium audio system (with Navigation). An additional option involves a larger, 12.3-inch high-resolution split screen multimedia display, with full-screen navigation capabilities and access to audio or climate controls (and other various systems).
From that strong starting point, drivers can upgrade the RX 350 and 450h to a 12-speaker premium audio system with Navigation. Also available, a 12.3-inch high-resolution split-screen multimedia display offers a full-screen navigation map or can provide simultaneous access to audio or climate controls and various systems.

Why Luxury Featuring the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250

Did you know that Carl Benz (of Mercedes-Benz), was awarded a German patent for a three-wheeled, self-propelled  “Motorwagen” in 1886- making his innovative invention arguably the first true automobile in history?  That innovation still ignites the industry today, personified in the undeniably powerful and sleek designs that make up modern-day Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The CLA is no exception, providing prospective luxury car buyers, with a seductive and time-tested option at an accessible luxury price point.

Other brands have made leaps and bounds towards producing entry-level luxury, four-door sedans, and coupes, contributing to the ultra-competitive market.  The Acura ILX has positive attributes-mainly reliability, safety, and resale value. But, when put side-by-side to a luxury manufacturer, such as Mercedes-Benz and the CLA, the differences are distinct and for an allegedly luxury vehicle, the ILX just does not measure up to its price point when compared to its luxury counterparts.

Today,  we compare the 2017 Acura ILX  and the 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA  to identify what exactly sets the two apart and to further answer the question “why luxury” when entering the realm of a $30,000 plus MSRP investment.

First, the 2018 Acura ILX:

In 2016, the Acura ILX was reimagined to give the smallest sedan a much needed, but seemingly ineffective facelift in the grand scheme of things. The 2018 version remains relatively unchanged with only minor cosmetic additions. Offered at three tiers of various packages, the 2018 Acura ILX ranges from an MSRP of around $29,000-$36,000 according to Edmunds, successfully challenging many of its entry-level rivals.

For an investment of about $30,000 for the base model, you’ll receive a 2.4-liter engine, 201 horsepower, front wheel drive, and a solid 25 MPG (City), 35 (Highway), and 29 MPG combined.  This combo offers more power than some of its more turbocharged counterparts, while still scoring well in safety.

Some additional features that come standard in this base ILX include:

  • Side mounted airbags
  • Upgrade headlights
  • Bluetooth capabilities
  • USB Ports
  • Heated seats and climate control
  • Backup camera
  • Sunroof

These are all features expected of a luxury vehicle, but once the vehicle hits the road, its “luxury” identifier starts to wain in performance- especially when its nested in a similar class to BMW, Audi, and of course, Mercedes-Benz.

Some common concerns include stiff ridge quality, near luxury interior, and a dual screen “infotainment” system which lacks convenience for the driver.  For amenities like navigation, adaptive cruise control, and parking assistance, you will have to upgrade your vehicle to a more premium package instead of being simply “optional” on the base models. The ILX’s design elements are quality enough with three interior and six exterior colors available.

Next, the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250:

Another formidable competitor in the entry-luxury segment is the CLA 250 that clocks in with an MSRP range of about $32,700- $51,400, a price tag that is not all surprising for a luxury class coupe from one of the most recognizable auto families.

At its core, you’ll receive a 2.0 liter inline-4 turbo engine, 7-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission, and an ECO start/stop system.  The standard CLA 250 is front wheel drive, but a client can have the option to opt for Mercedes’ 4Matic transmission. When one upgrades the AMG series CLA, that model comes standard with all-wheel drive. A Mercedes-Benz CLA also comes with a plethora of “optional” packages or add-ons to amp-up and customize any base model CLA, if desired.

The list of add-ons, options, and standard equipment is lengthy, but the more judicious buyer guided by our Park Place experts who assist our clients in finding their version of a perfect vehicle can still successfully build a Mercedes-Benz CLA for under $40,000.

This entry-level model receives fairly favorable fuel economy similar to that of its Acura competitor (24 City/ 37 Hwy/ 29 Combined), seating five. Where the CLA really distinguishes itself is in the realm of design.  The coupe has sleek, sharp contours that are further accentuated in its AMG trim, which is available in nine exterior and seven interior colors.  Inside, you will find a singular screen adjacent to a comfortable-to-grip steering wheel, and options of quality materials to provide front row passengers with a more affordable introduction to the luxurious feel that comes standard with the Mercedes badge.

A Park Place Experience:

At each of our four Park Place Mercedes-Benz locations, you will be provided with an exceptional client experience from the moment you send the first inquiry, purchase, routine oil changes, and your complimentary car wash and luxurious loaner vehicles.

We strive to put our clients first, and that starts with a simple, One-Touch purchasing process to make your purchase as personalized as possible.  Each Sales Manager is equipped to guide you through the process to ensure we are considerate of your time, budget, and checklist of wants, needs, and wishes.

For our advanced service bays, we employ certified technicians who use state of the art equipment to expertly diagnose and repair your vehicle, ensuring your investment is kept at peak performance- a truly priceless asset when making an investment in a luxury automotive experience.

The Verdict:

A Mercedes-Benz CLA provides the rider with a bounty of options to enhance and upgrade the base CLA model to reflect the client’s luxury wants. When entering the luxury auto segment, there are many options, but it’s pivotal to remember that brand prestige, along with power, design, and safety specs, is included in the price.  At an MSRP of close to $30,000, an Acura ILX is a weak competitor in a saturated luxury sedan/coupe market, and a Mercedes-Benz CLA will deliver a better quality performance with more features and options for your money.

Khamis’ Place: A Park Place Client Shares His Volvo Cars Overseas Delivery Experience

“Telling my friends and family that I flew to Sweden to pick up a car always makes them scratch their heads – for them it seems mind-boggling! You may be thinking the same thing too if you are looking to get a new car. I was frequently asked “How long did it take to get it? How do you ship it from Europe to the USA? How much extra did it cost? How did you know it was the car you wanted?” For those of you with those same questions, I’d like to tell our story.

Choosing a car

We had the added bonus of already owning a Volvo XC 90 that we purchased in 2016 for the family. When we started looking for a smaller car for just me; there was really no other car out there that had the features and comfort that I wanted in a crossover vehicle. I would encourage you to check out Audi, Ford, BMW, and Mercedes; but I’m certain that once you see the Volvo XC 60 you’ll realize it’s leaps and bounds advanced in comfort, tech features and value.

I saved Park Place for last with my wife because I knew their customer service would make the decision an easy one for my wife. Once I had a good idea of the customization and features I wanted in a car on the Volvo website, I brought those options to Park Place so I could experience the decisions I made.

Booking the trip

From our perspective, there was only one downside to taking the Overseas Delivery Experience (OSD) – the wait. The upsides far outweighed it:

  • Fully customized car
  • Discounted pricing
  • Waived destination fee
  • Free trip to Sweden for two

So we placed our order in June for our trip in September!

The trip:

My wife kindly offered to let me take my dad with me so she could stay and watch the kids.  My dad and I were both upgraded to economy plus by Volvo which made the flight a comfortable one. Upon arrival, we were picked up by a professional service in a brand new XC 60. She took us to a very modern hotel in Gothenburg (picked by Volvo).

After a nice breakfast at the hotel, we were picked up this time by a really nice V90 who took us to the Volvo factory welcome center to meet the car. The car was indoors and I was given a thorough overview by a knowledgeable product manager. We then were treated to a fine Swedish meatballs lunch at the center followed by a fascinating factory tour. During the factory tour, you get to see how the Volvos are made from metal to assembled car; my inner 4 year old was giddy with excitement to see powertrains added to bodies – MINUTE by MINUTE! So that’s 60 cars per hour!

We decided to spend the next couple of days exploring various sites around Gothenburg. My drone followed the car around while we visited some parks and other sites in the city. We used the drone activity as an excuse to explore the area – we went downtown, some islands, a castle, the harbor, a beach over some beautiful bridges and even an IKEA. It was a lot of fun scouting out exciting places, setting up the drone and capturing the Bursting Blue color of the XC 60 contrasting against the bright green landscape.  Dad and I got better and better with every shot.

Getting the Car

When you drop off the car at the FDC, they give you an estimated date and, of course, your VIN number. So I was able to track it’s shipment from Sweden to US; which took about 6 weeks. Then from the US (Georgia) to Park Place was another 3 weeks which was taken up mostly by customs.

The highlight of the experience was spending all the time with just my dad. Him being a grandfather and me being a father of 2 toddlers means that we only end up seeing each other once or twice a year amongst all the family. But the trip gave an easy excuse to spend time with just the two of us; exploring Europe, playing with the drone, seeing how cars are made, trying Swedish cuisine and…of course driving a sporty XC 60 around the countryside!”

3 Things To Know Before Your Next Park Place Oil Change

Receiving an oil change at a manufacturer certified service center has key advantages to maintaining your high-performance vehicle. While cost and service time are increased, we provide first-class quality, expertise, and additional services that clearly distinguish our premier level service experiences from a typical “oil change” job at a quick lube establishment.

At our Park Place Dealerships locations, we employ certified technicians who perform the routine services, such as your oil change, to ensure the entire process is completed to meet both manufacturer and Park Place standards of quality.

Here are three things our highly trained team of service experts want you to know before booking your next oil change:

1.An “Oil Change” service can take about 30-60 minutes depending on the manufacturer before any additional services or a courtesy car wash or additional services.

Park Place Motorcars Service Directors estimate that an oil change service that includes our complimentary services, including car washes and multi-point inspections, for our clients, can take 60-90  minutes to complete.

At Park Place Porsche, the service can take up to 90 minutes pre-car wash. Porsche’s have a large oil capacity- up to 10 quarts on some engines. The old oil must be completely drained from the vehicle. To do this, our technicians must heat the engine up to operating temperature to thin out the oil and allow it to then drain for a minimum of 20 minutes. The next 20 minutes are spent filling the engine with oil to capacity. To do this the engine is brought up to operating temperature and filled with new room temperature oil.  Our technicians check the oil levels with a computer- a process that takes three minutes and is repeated until the engine registers full.

2. You receive more than an “oil change” when choosing to service with the manufacturer certified dealership.

The term oil change has been used frequently in conjunction with quick lube establishments promising quick service and low cost. The dealership provides more value to the client’s experience by including car washes, loan cars, resetting computers, multi-point inspections, trained technicians, warranty repairs, a beautiful facility, and a client lounge for those who wish to wait for their service to be completed. Therefore, a Park Place dealership experience cannot be compared with a quick service only facility with the factors of time or money.

Example of Mercedes_Benz Visual Multi-Point Inspection Check List

3. An Oil Change is the easiest way to maintain (and save) your luxury vehicle’s high-performance capabilities.

Skimping out on routine oil changes (either by delaying your appointment or using components not recommended by your manufacturer) can be detrimental to the life of your vehicle. If you want to increase the longevity of your luxury auto, then making sure you’re on top of your oil changes should be priority number one. The oil is the life-blood and key ingredient in the engine which provides lubrication, cooling, and removal of particles and sludge.  With a squeaky clean and lubricated engine, you will also benefit from improved gas mileage. Park Place’s client lounges, loan cars, and Pick Up & Delivery programs help ease the hassle that can be associated with necessary maintenance. If you have questions regarding these offerings, contact your service advisor or coordinator and they’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have so that we can ensure your Park Place oil change experience is first class.

For a once a year service, the cost and time related to an “oil change” experience at Park Place is more than worth it.   If it’s your dream to own a luxury vehicle, then protecting your investment is too important to our team to simply offer quick drain and fill service.

Park Place Lexus Witnesses Warm Smiles as PISD Teachers are Gifted Over $100,000 in Grants

On November 9, 2017, The Plano ISD Education Foundation and Park Place Lexus gifted 102 teachers with grants totaling more than $100,000 resulting in a truly heartwarming start to their holiday season.

“The Education Foundation spends all year raising money. We’ll raise about $900,000 this year for grant programs in the district, and this is a part of that,” said Chris Bragg, former President of the Education Foundation.

With each proposal, judges evaluated the number of students impacted, the uniqueness of the project, what value it would bring to the classroom or how the proposal would fill in gaps in current student learning. Over the years, Park Place Lexus Plano has been a willing supporter of the Plano education community, with one of the highlight events being the yearly Grant Patrol.

“Children are the future of this world,” says Anam Ali, Community and Events Strategist at Park Place Dealerships and a yearly participant in the Grant Patrol, “To see how passionate some of these teachers are and seeing the growth opportunities for these children definitely pulls the right strings.”

Why Luxury Featuring the 2017 Lexus RX 350 F Sport

Toyota Motor Corporation has mastered the art of offering the masses the bare minimum of exactly what they want to purchase and then finding a way to offer an “all that and more” in their amped-up, luxurious Lexus lineups. In this installment of our “Why Luxury” series, we compare two popular members of the mid-size SUV segment, the 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and the 2017 Lexus RX F Sport.

If you did not know already, Lexus is a child brand of the Toyota Motor Corporation and it’s certainly no wonder. One of the most reliable and highly rated luxury brands in the market shares commonalities with arguably the best all-rounder economy brand in build, reliability, safety, and maintenance. In 2017, Lexus and Toyota individually earned top marks with KBB in resale value; Toyota as a brand, and the 2017 Lexus GS by make. Simply put, Toyota Motor Corporation has mastered the art of offering the masses the bare minimum of exactly what they want to purchase and then finding a way to offer an “all that and more” in their amped-up Lexus lineups.

A client’s roadmap to upgrading their daily driver (say a Toyota) to a statement luxury auto (a Lexus) has never been so straightforward and thus begs the question “why should I upgrade?” In today’s “Why Luxury” we will be comparing stats of two dominating bodies in the mid-size SUV segment the top of the line 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the 2017 Lexus RX F to provide some insight into why the luxury option is a solid investment.

A few notes on mid-size SUVs:

Since 2015, the midsize SUV segment continues to attract buyers of all ages who desire to indulge in a more space and cargo capacity, without entering the realms of “too much.” The midsize SUV is a medium sized SUV, providing less cargo space and seating than a full-size SUV similar to a Range Rover. Consistently low gas prices (think below $3.00 a gallon on average) have also added enticement for prospective buyers to choose the larger vehicle.

It’s a consistently dominating body style in both affordable and luxury segments since 2016, with global sales projected to increase by 5.65% (or over 23 million units) in 2020 per a 2016 Market Trend Analysis. In the month of October 2017, the RX saw a 4% gain in U.S. Sales– helping make October the sixth straight “best-ever month” for Lexus utility vehicles, according to Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Jeff Bracken.

Baseline Specs:

The 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited Platinum SUV is the top of the line, fully-loaded model with an MSRP of $49,534 and an average price paid of around $46,000 according to Edmunds.  Admittedly, that high price tag for a Toyota brand car raises some eyebrows, but it does have some advantages surrounding one specific detail: space.

All models have an extra third row (total seven seats available), a longer roof, and roughly 140 more cubic feet of space than its in-house competitor which comes standard.  The interior of this supped up Highlander offers Toyota’s finest leather, woods, and aluminum to make the time spent inside the vehicle a bit more aesthetically pleasing than other variances of the SUV.

The 2017Lexus RX 350 F Sport comes in at an MSRP of around $54,423, with the average price paid of $50,403- less than $1,000 more than the MSRP of the Highlander.  A third row is a non-existent option in this model and it dotes a bit less interior room at 108 cubic feet. This difference, though, is nominal if you aren’t toting teams of children or mounds of grocery sacks on a regular basis.

If that extra cargo room and the extra seats are a deal breaker, the 2018 Lexus RXL, which includes a third row of seats, has been confirmed to debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show.

Under the hood, you’ll see that the Highlander and Lexus RX F share similar specs including a 3.5 liter V6 engine similar fuel economy. The Highlander provides a combined fuel economy of about 28 mpg, but has a lower fuel capacity by a couple gallons. The RX shares an almost similar fuel economy of 22 mpg, but a larger tank capacity by two gallons.

The Luxury Difference:

Lexus provides clients with a better warranty than that of its Toyota counterpart- a four year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and a six-year, 70,000 drivetrain warranty. Additionally, Lexus includes a 4-year/ unlimited mile, roadside assistance versus the Highlander’s 2 years of roadside assistance.

The RX F Sport sends 295 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque for a more powerful driving experience. The F-Sport series also provides clients with a revised suspension, cross-hatched spindle grille, and darker trim bits to add a touch more horsepower to this mid-size luxury SUV.

The aesthetics of your Lexus can be more personalized, with 10 interior and 10 exterior colors available versus the Highlander Hybrid’s four and eight respectively.  When choosing to venture into the world of Lexus Luxury, you can certainly be confident that your vehicle will reflect your striking and unique style with meticulous detail that begins on the factory line; the Lexus final product takes longer to produce per task on the assembly line due to master precision, build quality, and higher-end interior choices that are difficult to match at the economy class segment.

Although you can purchase an ultra-reliable vehicle with some amenities, the dealership experience at Lexus aims to be that of a luxury hotel with first class client lounges complete with Wifi, group and individual workstations, a calm, quiet environment, and exceptional client service so that even the on-the-go professional can have their Lexus serviced with peace of mind.

The Verdict:

The 2017 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the Lexus RX 350 F Series, are both fantastic options for anyone vying for the SUV market- as proved through their various high ranking achievements among other competitors. But, when both economy and luxury price tags hover in the realm of $45,000- $50,000, choosing Lexus style, comfort, performance, and dealership experience, all while retaining the value and fuel efficiency already offered promised by Toyota Motor Corporation, makes the most sense.
