Porsche Celebrates 70th Anniversary

“In the beginning I looked around and could not find quite the car I dreamed of. So I decided to build it myself.”  – Ferry, Porsche

1948. The year the first vehicle to bear the Porsche badge was produced. The year the name of one of the world’s greatest contributions to sports car history debuted. The year the Porsche brand was born.

For the past 70 years, Porsche has represented sports car construction, performance, and design at the highest level becoming not just another luxury manufacturer, but rather an icon in the sports car space. Ferdinand Anton Ernst, or Ferry Porsche, said: “In the beginning I looked around and could not find quite the car I dreamed of. So I decided to build it myself.” He inaugurated the Porsche Type 356 “No.1” Roadster in 1948, which was actually the accumulation of sports car technology created by none of other than Porsche Ferry himself.

His pre-Porsche Type 356 accomplishments include building an electric car with a wheel hub drive (the Lohner-Porsche) and creating a template for hybrid vehicles by developing a mixed petrol-electric powertrain in the year 1900. About thirty years later he founded his own engineering office and showcased the “Berlin-Rome Car” in 1939, which was the foundation of his Porsche sports car vision and the 1948 Type 356 (on the left in the photo below).

Porsche 70th Anniversary Featuring the Mission E and the 1948 Type 356

In 1963, Ferry’s son, Ferdinand Alexander, designed and debuted the Porsche 911. Since then the flagship sports car has been built over a million times. Oliver Blume, current Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, commented on the original 911 at an earlier event, “As the centrepiece of the brand, the 911 has become the sports car of dreams, winning the collective heart of enthusiasts all over the world.” Park Place Porsche emulated this piece of sports car history as a focal point of their part of Sports Car Together Day, showcasing nearly every model year of the iconic Porsche 911s at the celebration in Dallas.

As we look forward to the future of Porsche Performance, our focus turns to the Mission E. The Mission E combines “distinctive emotional design of a Porsche, exceptional driving performance, and forward thinking everyday functionality.” It comes equipped with 600hp, a range of 500km (about 310 miles), and accelerates 0-60mph in less than 3.5 seconds.  This Porsche is electric- literally, and with a charging time of 15 minutes for around 80% capacity, the Mission E provides time-saving value to electric vehicle mobility.

The past, present, and future of Porsche is purely epic, from the 1948 Type 365, the Porsche 911, and the upcoming Mission E.  Porsche’s 70th Anniversary Sports Car Together Day is an international event bringing Porsche fans together to celebrate to the legendary brand that’s defined ‘sports car’ for the rest of the industry. It’s was toast to heritage, tradition, Ferry Porsche, and the enduring legacy of Porsche performance.

Jaguar Celebrates the Original ‘Experimental Jaguar’ with the Limited Edition XJ50

After 50 years of making their flagship Sedan, Jaguar is celebrating half a century of tradition with the launch of the Jaguar XJ50.  On this limited edition, a passenger will note unique front and rear bumpers, as well as ‘purposeful’ 20-inch wheels with Gloss Black Diamond Turned Finish. Unique badging arms the rear and side vents, to accent four striking paint options include Fuji White, Santorini Black, Loire Blue, and Rosello Red.

The XJ50 remains true to its Jaguar core, representing the heritage of the XJ Sedan with a “balance of design, intelligent performance, and indulgent luxury”- according to Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design.  It’s a cornerstone of Jaguar design and it’s a model worth celebrating. Below we travel back to the beginning of the XJ legacy at the Paris Motor Show, to see what lead to the creation of a limited edition XJ.

The debut of the XJ

1968 XJ Series 1

1968 marks the year the Jaguar XJ debuted as an ‘eXperimental’ project for the luxury manufacturer at the Paris Motor show, and later named ‘Car of the Year’ by Car Magazine. Jaguars of the late 60’s, including the XJ6 Series 1, were marked with a low seat back because Sir Williams Lyons insisted that the top of the seats should never be seen above the belt line. This feature specification disappeared in the coming years, but still represented Lyons’ forward thinking mentality with Jaguar and specifically, the XJ.

XJC Series 2

Series 2 Launches

The Series 2 launched in 1973 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. While reminiscent of its predecessor, Jaguar now also offered the XJ in an exciting two-door coupe design. The designers took five years of learnings to implement key changes like a long, more luxurious wheelbase in the sedan versions, reserving the short wheelbase for the Coupe. Come 1977, the coupe was discontinued after reaching just over 10,000 units in completed production.

A Classic Update

XJ Series 3

When it was almost time for a Series 3 model to launch, Jaguar looked outside their design circle for the restyling. The famous Italian house of Pininfarina delivered a classic update that brought instant acclaim to the Series 3. A new vertical bar radiator grille, a new roof, new door handles, and improvements to the interior helped propel the redesigned XJ to one of Jaguar’s most successful models.

February 1985

Despite retiring in 1972, the co-founder of Jaguar still maintained his presence in the styling studio. The last vehicle he had any influence over was the XJ40, which unmistakably resembled the ‘80s in its styling and featured a new rear suspension with double wishbones. Sir William Lyons, known as ‘Mr. Jaguar,’ passed away in his home in 1985.

Softer Shapes and Four Headlamps

In the early 1990s, the XJ40 was redesigned into the X300, which sported softer shapes and rounded headlamps on the front end- a trend starting to make its way back in the 90s. In 1994, the revised XJ6 went on sale and the curved headlamps made another welcome appearance.

Redefining Automobile History

When the new millennium hit, Jaguar braced for a fresh start producing XJ’s that looked and handled exceptionally well. The 2002 XJ was a first for the auto industry, inciting revolution by having most of the 2002 model’s parts made from aluminum. This resulted in lighter, stronger, and more agile vehicle serving up a dynamic driving experience.

50 Years later:

After years of redesigns and Jaguar XJ vision, 2018 still proves to welcome the likes of the XJ to the luxury market. The limited edition XJ-50 is a fitting tribute to the legacy and performance spanning over five decades of the Jaguar brand.

New Porsche Cayenne Available as Plug-In Hybrid

Porsche is making the journey to towards e-mobility through the new Cayenne E-Hybrid, with an electric engine that is now boasting a 43 percent increase in electric engine performance than its predecessor (136hp). Both systems (electric and combustion engine) combined bring the vehicle’s total system power to 462 hp. To ensure the electric engine can be used in all of the standard Sport Chrono Package’s driving modes, Porsche’s Boost strategy derives from the 918 Spyder supercar.

Maximum system torque becomes available as you press the accelerator pedal, and depending on the driving situation, drivers can draw on the boost torque across the entire range of speeds leading to more agile and superior driving experiences. Generally in performance-focused Sport and Sport Plus modes, all of the battery’s energy can be used for a boost; in Sport mode, the battery is charged just as much as is required for a new boost; and finally, in Sport Plus mode, the batter is recharged as quickly as possible.

Porsche Battery and Wireless Technology

The battery capacity of the Cayenne E-Hybrid is improved dramatically, in addition to the distance in both boost and distance reserves. Compared to the previous model, the battery capacity increased from 10,8-14.1 kWh (30 percent). The battery is fluid cooled and stored beneath the loading floor in the rear of the car and consists of eight cell modules containing 13 lithium-ion cells each. The charging process is managed and monitored using Porsche technology via the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) and the Porsche Connect app (remotely).

When the vehicle’s ignition is switched off, independent climate control is standard and can also be controlled via a smartphone with Porsche Connect. Additionally, the App will help you find and filter charging stations and set these as navigation destinations.  As an owner of the Cayenne E-Hybrid, Porsche will allow you cross-provider access to public charging stations without requiring additional registration with the relevant provider (all charges are just billed directly via the Porsche ID account). It’s a pretty seamless Porsche experience, from your initial charge to your engine boost.

New Hybrid Module and Rapid Switching Tiptronic S

Porsche redesigned the Cayenne E-Hybrid’s drive train. The hybrid module consists of a highly-integrated combination of electric engine and separating clutch. In contrast to the previous electro-hydraulic system with the spindle actuator, the separating clutch is operated electromechanically, which ensures even faster reaction times. The transmission acquires the new Tiptronic S, newly developed for the entire Cayenne range with eight speeds. The automatic gearbox not only offers even more comfortable and smoother starting but also significantly speeds up switching. Interruption of tractive force during switching processes is also reduced further.

Active Hang-On All-Wheel Drive and 3.5 ton Trailer Load

With Porsche Traction Management (PTM), the Cayenne E-Hybrid has an active hang-on all-wheel drive with an electronically regulated, map-controlled multi-plate clutch. With its broad range of torque distribution, the system offers clear benefits in terms of driving dynamics, agility, traction control and offroad capabilities. Thanks to the brand new chassis, Cayenne E-Hybrid offers the same sports car driving dynamics as all models of the new Cayenne generation. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is available as standard. Optional features include the electric Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll stabilization system and a trailer connection for loads up to 3.5 tonnes.

New Options, Including Heads-Up Display and 22-inch Light Metal Wheels

With the launch of the Cayenne E-Hybrid, Porsche expands its range of assistance systems and optional features for the entire series with a variety of innovations. For the first time, head-up display is available in a Porsche. It projects all the relevant driving information directly into the driver’s line of vision in a full-color display. Other new features now available in the Cayenne include the smart digital copilot Porsche InnoDrive with adaptive cruise control, massage seats, a heated windscreen, independent heating with remote operation and 22-inch light metal wheels.

The McLaren Senna GTR Concept: The Most Extreme McLaren Ever

McLaren Automotive is to offer a track-only version of its newest Ultimate Series model, the McLaren Senna. Unveiled at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, the McLaren Senna GTR Concept produces more power and torque than the road-legal McLaren Senna and achieves the quickest McLaren lap times outside Formula 1.

A few months ago, McLaren unveiled their most extreme street-legal track car and all 500 units have already been sold. This past month at the Geneva Auto Convention, McLaren made another bold statement releasing a track-only version of the Senna- the McLaren Senna GTR, which will cost $1.4 million.

Only 75 of the most extreme McLaren will go to production, providing “The very limited number of customers who secure this car will be buying the closest experience you can get to a race car without actually lining up on a circuit grid,” McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said in a press release.

The Senna series is inspired by one of McLaren’s greatest racing drivers, “utterly dedicated to allowing the driver to be the best they can possibly be.” The exact technical details of $1.4 million dollar vehicle will be released later this year, but what we do know is that while the McLaren Senna GTR will weight a similar 1, 198kg as its street legal predecessor (see video below), it will be even faster.

“The McLaren Senna GTR Concept unveiled in Geneva is not the finished article but it does give a clear indication of our thinking for the car, which promises to be the most extreme and exciting McLaren to drive for many years, if not ever.” –Design Engineering Director, Dan Parry-Williams.

Lexus built its reputation with the launch of the LS (Luxury Sedan) nearly 30 years ago, solidifying its position as the ultimate flagship Sedan. And this new fifth-generation model lives up to its acclaim, combining a luxurious interior with the latest in technology and a fresh design. While the new sedan sits lower to the ground, Lexus offers an air suspension system with an “access function” that can raise the vehicle for even easier access.

Inspired by Japanese lanterns, the ambient interior lighting sets the mood for a luxurious ride. Sweeping lines curve and spread along the contours of the dash, then flow back along the door panels, creating an expansive environment.Anchoring the intuitive infotainment system is a bright 12-inch display, with an optional 24-inch screen, the largest color heads-up display of any production car in the world.

Powered by an all-new twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6, and matched with a new Aisin 10-speed automatic, this luxurious beast churns out 416 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque to smoothly propel you from 0-to-60 mph in just over five seconds.

Starting at $75,000 MSRP, the LS 500 sets a new standard for agility, style, and comfort.

Your Top Selling Mercedes-Benz Receives Upgrades for 2019

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is officially the manufacturer’s top-selling model for four years in a row with worldwide sales reaching 415,000 in 2017. The 2019 sedan made its global debut at the 2018 Geneva Autoshow, premiering increased power output and extended driver assistance programs.

A More Powerful Engine

14 horsepower has been added with a new 2.0-liter inline -4 turbo engine that produces 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.  A 9G-TRONIC 9-Speed automatic transmission creates a more dynamic driving experience. The transmission transfers torque using fluid instead of a mechanical clutch, which reduces fuel consumption and increases driving performance and comfort.

Expressive Exterior

The refreshed C-Class combines emotion with intelligence, beginning with a redesigned front and LED headlamps and tail lamps, now standard in the C-Class Sedan. The modifications to the front and rear bumpers and additions of AMG-Line features create more expressive and dynamic character. The headlamps personify Mercedes-Benz attention detail with its clean-lined contours. Finally, on the exterior, two additional paint colors have been added including Mojave Silver Metallic and Emerald Green Metallic.

Interior Upgrades and Options

The interior received some fine-tuning to amp-up the driver experience and re-interpret modern luxury. The center console trim is now available in Walnut Wood or Natural Grain Grey Oak Wood, but any option will yield the look of flowing elegance. The 3D real wood veneer in the center console combines a hand-crafted character with a modern feel. Magma Grey/Black upholstery is newly available for the interior, as is Saddle Brown and Silk Beige/Black for the AMG-Line Interior.

The Display Concept: C-Class Adopts S-Class Features

A notable upgrade in the C-Class sedan includes an optional fully digital instrument display equipped with three different display styles: Classic, Sport, and Progressive. The base model provides a standard 5-inch display, but an upgrade to the fully digital instrument display will yield a 12.3-inch screen with an intense resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels. The central display is available in two sizes, a 7-inch standard display screen and an optional 10.25-inch COMAND® display screen.

State-of-the-Art Active Safety

The updated C-Class features the latest driver assistance systems available in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, offering the driver cooperative support and providing for a higher standard of active safety than its predecessor. The C-Class is able to drive semi-autonomously (in certain situations), by keeping a close eye on traffic with improved camera and radar systems allow it to see up to 1,640 feet ahead. The vehicle’s surroundings are scanned by radar across a distance of up to 820 feet to the front, 130 feet to the sides, and 260 feet to the rear, while with the camera a range of up to 1,640 feet is possible to the front, including 295 feet in 3D.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz C-Class will be available at the end of 2018, so stay tuned to Mercedes-Benz USA and Park Place Dealerships for more information and news.
