Volvo Cars USA Launches Complimentary Tow for Life

Safety. The driver behind Volvo Cars’ strategy over the past few years was to provide their drivers and passengers alike with peace of mind on the road. This goes back to their goal of eliminating death or serious injury in a Volvo Car by 2020.

Now, they’ve taken safety to a whole new level of convenience by pledging complimentary Tow for Life, free of charge.

No matter the vintage, Volvo Cars USA  will now provide roadside towing as an expansion of their suite of complimentary services. Tow For Life works alongside Volvo Car Accident Advisor and the Volvo Lifetime Replacement Parts & Labor Warranty.

“Tow for Life ensures that in the event of a breakdown, help is on hand no matter the age of the vehicle,” said Scott Doering, Head of Customer Service for Volvo Car USA, “It’s a commitment to all our customers that cars will be taken to experts who use genuine Volvo parts and repair methods. This will get the customer back on the road faster and provide assurance that the repair was done right.”

If you’re under warrant, towing was already included as part of the roadside assistance. Now there is no additional fee to use Tow for Life for post-warranty customers.  Volvo customers can call for help through Volvo On-Call or via Volvo Customer Care at 1 (800) 550-5658. Vehicle tows that are initiated through these channels will have their tow to a local Volvo retailer covered under the program.

Volvo and Uber Take Next Stops Towards Self-Driving Cars

After years of research and testing, Volvo Cars, a leader in automotive safety, and Uber, the leading ride-hailing firm, today present a jointly developed production car capable of driving by itself, the next step in the strategic collaboration between both companies.

Uber and Volvo Cars entered a joint engineering agreement in 2016 and have since developed several prototypes aimed at accelerating the companies’ self-driving car development. The Volvo XC90 SUV presented today is the first production car that in combination with Uber’s self-driving system is capable of fully driving itself.

The XC90 base vehicle is equipped with key safety features that allow Uber to easily install its own self-driving system, enabling the possible future deployment of self-driving cars in Uber’s network as an autonomous ridesharing service.

The most important features of Volvo Cars’ autonomous drive-ready production vehicle include several back-up systems for both steering and braking functions as well as battery back-up power. If any of the primary systems should fail for some reason, the back-up systems are designed to immediately act to bring the car to a stop. In addition to Volvo’s built-in back-up systems, an array of sensors atop and built into the vehicle are designed for Uber’s self-driving system to safely operate and maneuver in an urban environment.

When paired with Volvo’s vehicle platform, Uber’s self-driving system may one day allow for safe, reliable autonomous ridesharing without the need for a Mission Specialist, the specially trained Uber employees operating and overseeing the car in areas designated and suitable for autonomous drive.

The autonomous drive-capable production vehicle revealed today is part of Volvo Cars’ 2016 commercial agreement with Uber for the delivery of tens of thousands of autonomous drive-ready base cars in coming years.

“We believe autonomous drive technology will allow us to further improve safety, the foundation of our company,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “By the middle of the next decade we expect one-third of all cars we sell to be fully autonomous. Our agreement with Uber underlines our ambition to be the supplier of choice to the world’s leading ride-hailing companies.”

“Working in close cooperation with companies like Volvo is a key ingredient to effectively building a safe, scalable, self-driving fleet,” said Eric Meyhofer, CEO of Uber Advanced Technologies Group. “Volvo has long been known for their commitment to safety, which is the cornerstone of their newest production-ready self-driving base vehicle. When paired with our self-driving technology, this vehicle will be a key ingredient in Uber’s autonomous product suite.”

Volvo Cars plans to use a similar autonomous base vehicle concept for the introduction of its future autonomous drive cars in the early 2020s. These technologies, to be introduced on the next generation of Volvo models based on the SPA2 vehicle architecture, will include features designed to enable unsupervised autonomous drive in clearly designated areas such as highways and ring roads.

Volvo Cars believes autonomous drive can generate significant potential road safety benefits for society as a whole when all cars are autonomous. Until that moment, the technology can offer customers a better driving experience by taking away mundane tasks such as stop-start driving in traffic jams.

2019 Park Place Dealerships – Texas Rangers Triple Play Game Show Spectacular Breaks Record with $770,000 Raised

Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation Escapes to Margaritaville

With a playful theme of “Escape to Margaritaville,” fans filled the Hilton Anatole ballroom May 5th looking for rare treasures, unbridled laughter and fun encounters with their favorite players and coaches at the sold-out 2019 Park Place Dealerships – Texas Rangers Triple Play Game Show Spectacular. And the Rangers hit a grand slam!

“The Park Place Dealerships – Texas Rangers Triple Play has always been our largest fundraising event and this year’s total made a record $770,000,” said Karin Morris, executive director of the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation. “The funds raised at this event directly impact our programming and partnerships. Since last year’s event, we have welcomed more than 25,000 kids to the Texas Rangers MLB Youth Academy at Mercy Street Sports Complex, presented by Toyota.”

The annual event featured Texas Rangers players, coaches, broadcasters, and alumni. Fans enjoyed unparalleled access to their favorite Rangers for autographs, photos and lively baseball conversations with a player, coach, former Rangers player or staff member seated at their table.

“This is the 15th year Park Place has been involved in this event and every year it surpasses our expectations,” said Jordan Case, Park Place Dealerships president. “Supporting the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation ensures children throughout North Texas will have opportunities to succeed through scholarships, new training facilities, and programs. Together, we are making our community stronger.”

The live and silent auctions raised more than $225,000, also a record. The highest amount in the live auction was a $31,000 bid for a trip on a private jet with Hall of Fame catcher Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez to see the Rangers play against the Angels in Anaheim. The amount was doubled when the Rangers agreed to allow both of the two top bidders to take the trip for a total of $62,000 for the dream trip.

Other notable experiences included a roadtrip to Boston to see the Rangers play the Red Sox that included transportation on the team plane and dining with Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley; a trip to the Dominican Republic for a tour of the Rangers’ new Baseball Academy; private hitting and pitching lessons with current Rangers players, and many other exclusive experiences. Memorabilia from the worlds of sports and entertainment included a license plate signed by the stars of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off;” a framed photo autographed by legendary players Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio; an autographed seat back from the original Texas Stadium; a photo signed by the cast of “The Sandlot;” and countless signed jerseys and equipment from a wide range of sports.

Fans and players competed against each other in a spirited game of Heads or Tails. Tim Willett, auctioneer, would flip a coin and contestants placed their hands on either their head or derriere. If the coin landed on tails, all those with hands on their heads would sit down.

Contestants were eliminated round by round until only two people were left on stage. Willett tossed the coin for one final flip, and Leta Farnsworth won tickets to the Paul McCartney and Billy Joel concerts later this year at Globe Life Park.

The highlight of the evening is always when the players compete in a pair of game shows. The entertainment began with a new game: Heads Up, where a player holds a card up to their forehead with a word or name written on it. Their teammates then give them clues to try to guess the answer. Rangers pitchers Jesse Chavez and Chris Martin were teamed up with catcher Jeff Mathis to battle Rangers’ bullpen coach Oscar Marin and pitchers Shelby Miller and Drew Smyly. The resulting antics were hilarious as players stammered and shouted answers under pressure as they tried to beat the clock. Jesse Chavez was holding a card with “Kanye West” on it and his teammates prompted him with, “Kim Kardashian’s husband!” To which Chavez replied, “Chloe?” The audience erupted in laughter.

The Rangers’ rookies never fail to entertain. Kyle Dowdy, Brett Martin, Adrian Sampson and Ariel Jurado performed a hysterical skit to “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X, featuring Billy Ray Cyrus. Don’t worry. They won’t be taking this show on the road any time soon. But it certainly made for some memorable moments.

If you think the Rangers are competitive on the field, imagine what happens when the infielders match wits with the outfielders in Fielders Feud, a popular spinoff of the popular Family Feud TV game show. Players tried to guess the top answers given by 100 Rangers fans in a survey taken at Globe Life Park. Both teams were stumped when it came time to guess the fans’ responses to the question, “What are your favorite memories from Globe Life Park?”

Rangers Hall of Fame broadcaster Eric Nadel moderates Fielders Feud with Infielders Isiah Kiner-Falefa , Logan Forsythe, Rougned Odor and Elvis Andrus competing against Outfielders Hunter Pence, Delino DeShields Jr, Joey Gallo and Nomar Mazara

Players were able to match answers such as “Beltre’s 3000th hit” and “Striking out A-Rod in the ALCS.” But the crowd let out a gasp when “Rougie’s Punch” was not one of the top answers.

“The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation was recognized last year with the Allan H. Selig Award for Philanthropic Excellence for our Richard Greene Scholars program,” concluded Karin Morris. “As part of this recognition, the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation will receive a $10,000 grant from Major League Baseball Charities.”

Named after the former Mayor of Arlington who led the campaign to keep the Rangers in Arlington and construct Globe Life Park, the Richard Greene Scholars program provides a $10,000 scholarship every year to a student at each of the Arlington ISD high schools. During the recipient’s senior year, he/she rotates through an internship every six weeks at different community service and local government entities.

Now in its 22nd year of operation, the Richard Greene Scholars program has provided more than $1.2 million in college scholarships to Arlington high school students. In addition to financial aid, the program has become a cornerstone leadership development program by engaging recipients with local civic and business communities, including Arlington ISD, the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, the City of Arlington, the Texas Rangers and the Rangers Baseball Foundation, and several other civic partners.

Since its inception in 1991, the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation has invested more than $30 million in our community to help children through support of programs including the Texas Rangers MLB Youth Academy at Mercy Street Sports Complex, presented by Toyota; youth fitness and wellness programs like the just keep livin programs; scholarships and summer programming for children in challenging circumstances.

Volvo XC90 Named Best Used Car By CarGurus

From Volvo Pressroom

Two generations of Volvo XC90 SUVs have been recognized as solid pre-owned purchases by CarGurus.com, a leading online automotive marketplace.

The experts at CarGurus named the 2014-2018 XC90 a Best Used Car in the Luxury Midsize Crossover/SUV category. The 2014 model year was the last year the original, game-changing XC90 was made. The current generation XC90 launched in 2015 as part of a bold plan to remake the entire Volvo product line-up. Both models were named North American Truck/SUV of the Year.

Matt Smith, CarGurus Senior Editor, said, “A pre-owned Volvo XC90 will delight shoppers looking to combine luxury with safety in their next family car. Not only does the XC90 impress CarGurus’ expert reviewers, it also retains its value well above the segment average, meaning this 3-row luxury crossover won’t suffer from depreciation as dramatically as some of its competitors.”

“Customers can be confident in buying any pre-owned Volvo car,” said Anders Gustafsson, president and CEO of Volvo Car USA. “To have the experts at CarGurus give two generations of XC90 a top category award only reinforces that.”

CarGurus’ award scoring for nominees was based on evaluating a number of criteria: user reviews, professional test drives, popularity, availability, and CarGurus’ projected 12-year value retention. The model with the highest overall score was determined the winner for each category.

Volvo offers these award-winning pre-owned XC90 models through its Certified by Volvo program. Certified by Volvo vehicles meet the strictest criteria and are backed by the company’s unlimited mileage warranty. Each must pass a rigorous, 170-point inspection, have less than 80,000 miles, and receive a detailed CARFAX Vehicle History Report.

Before being certified, Volvo repairs or replaces any necessary components – carefully checking the exterior and powertrain – and even does a road test. A factory-backed warranty covers every part of each Certified by Volvo vehicle that is not specifically excluded, including the replacement or repair of thousands of components. Plus, it’s upgradeable up to ten years. Complimentary roadside assistance and a zero deductible for all warranty visits are also included.

Certified by Volvo vehicles also include emergency towing & lockout service and trip interruption benefits. Full details on the Certified by Volvo program are available at https://www.volvocars.com/us/shopping-tools/shop/certified-pre-owned.

Volvo Introduces New Digital Library Focused on Safety

By saving over one million lives, Volvo has made a name for itself in the world of automotive safety. While that statistic is not exclusive to Volvo Cars alone, over the past 60 years, the auto manufacturer has shared its knowledge contributing to the overall increased safety in the automotive industry and to the one million lives saved.

To celebrate 60 years of sharing knowledge within the automotive world, Volvo has introduced a central digital library for the greater automotive community called E.V.A.

Introducing E.V.A

The three-pointed seat belt was introduced by Volvo in 1959 and was an early car safety development across the auto landscape. 60 years later, Volvo Cars continues to share knowledge within the E.V.A. Initiative. E.VA. celebrates car safety research and showcases a fundamental issue of inequalities in car safety development.

“We have data on tens of thousands of real-life accidents, to help ensure our cars are as safe as they can be for what happens in real traffic,” says Lotta Jakobsson, professor and senior technical specialist at Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “This means our cars are developed with the aim to protect all people, regardless of gender, height, shape or weight, beyond the ‘average person’ represented by crash test dummies.”

Volvo’s E.V.A. initiative highlights that women are more at risk for some injuries in a car crash. Due to differences in anatomy between the average man and woman, women are more likely to suffer whiplash injuries.

Volvo’s data, in addition to other studies, supported the brand’s efforts to create virtual crash test dummies in order to better understand accidents. These tests helped develop technologies to better protect both men and women equally.

Safety Technology Responses

The first technology that was found following digital testing was WHIPS whiplash protection introduced in 1998. This technology has led to the exclusive Volvo seat and head restraint design.

New technology is developed to not only meet safety standards or pass regulatory tests, but also to show where safety can be improved based on Volvo’s research data and analysis.

Side impact accidents were the main focus during the 1980s. At the time, data showed that too many people were injured in side-impact collisions due to the distance between impact and occupant. Several Volvo innovations followed such as the side impact protection system (SIPS), side airbags, and inflatable curtains.

Recent data from Volvo Cars has shown an issue with the lumbar spine, or lower back, injuries across all people, regardless of gender and size. Further analysis drove Volvo’s focus on the dangers of run-off-road injuries. The resulting technology is an energy absorber in the seats, first introduced on the XC90 and now on all SPA-based cars.

Next Level Safety

You too can enjoy the next-level safety advancements today by visiting Park Place Volvo or search for your next Volvo. To ensure that your current Volvo is maintained to the best standards, you can also schedule your next Volvo service appointment.

Volvo Care Keys and New Top Speeds Make For Safer Car Sharing

In an effort to realize their Vision 2020, Volvo Cars introduced speed restrictions and a new product concept called “Care Key” that is standard on all cars for safe car sharing, to help address and highlight the dangers of speeding.

TOP SPEEDS: 112 MPH

World leader in vehicle safety, Volvo Cars, is sending a strong and very loud message about the dangers of speeding.  Early March 2019, Volvo Cars announced its commitment to address the growing dangers of speeding by reducing the top speeds on all of their cars to 112 mph.  This new speed restriction will first appear in 2020 with Model Year 2021 vehicles, and aligns with the company’s commitment to protect their drivers.

“Volvo is a leader in safety: we always have been and we always will be,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive, Volvo Car Group. “Because of our research we know where the problem areas are when it comes to ending serious injuries and fatalities in our cars. And while a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it’s worth doing if we can even save one life.”

This update is in line with their ‘Vision 2020’ which is easily one of the most, if not the most, ambitious safety promise in the Automotive Industry.  Vision 2020 aims to reduce and eliminate any fatalities or major injuries in a Volvo vehicle by 2020.

VOLVO CARE KEY

Volvo Cars introduces Care Key as standard on all cars for safe car sharing

Care Key is similar in that it allows you set top speeds with the key, ensuring any drivers sharing a vehicle (like a newly licensed teenager) cannot go above the speed limit. Not only is this supposed to protect your investment in a Volvo, but also the passengers turned drivers you care for most.

The benefits of these two safety updates could surpass just safety, but also offer financial benefits to Volvo Cars Drivers. The luxury manufacturer is inviting insurance companies to the table to discuss special offers and incentives for those that are benefiting by investing in Volvo in the next few years as these safety measures are implemented.  Mr. Samuelsson pointed out that safer technology being included in their future models should have only a positive impact on insurance premiums.

Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars President & Chief Executive

“We believe that a car maker has a responsibility to help improve traffic safety,” said Mr. Samuelsson. “Our recently announced speed limit fits that thinking and the Care Key is another example. Many want to be able to share their car with friends and family, but are unsure about how to make sure they are safe on the road. The Care Key provides one good solution and extra peace of mind.”

Now will these initiatives change consumer behaviors for safer roads? While that’s the hope, it’s clear that Volvo Cars is serious about starting the conversion about a possible manufacturer obligation to their customers and making the roads safer for their drivers, co-drivers, and passengers alike.

Stay tuned to Volvo Cars and to our blog for continued coverage of Volvo’s commitment to vehicle safety as more technology and measures are introduced to help Vision 2020 come to fruition.

Volvo’s all-new S60 luxury sedan and V60 luxury wagon as well as the XC40 luxury SUV have been named finalist for the esteemed, 2019 World Car Awards. The S60/V60 is a finalist in the World Car of the Year category. A 2019 victory would earn back-to-back titles for Volvo as the XC60 luxury SUV was crowned the 2018 World Car of the Year.

The XC40 is also in the running for World Car Design of the Year honors. Volvo’s XC40 continues its worldwide accolade tour as the small luxury SUV earned European Car of the Year in 2018.

Car and Driver also acknowledged the XC40 and four other models as Editor’s Choice award vehicles in 2019. After testing 500 cars from an assortment of makes and models, the XC90, XC60, XC40 SUVs, and V90 and V90 Cross Country wagons were recommended by Car and Driver editors.

Volvo’s XC90 was praised for its satisfying drive and proficient safety tech options. The XC60 was lauded for its fuel efficiency, the smooth Swedish design, trailblazing driver assistance. Interior design qualities of the XC40 were brought to the forefront as well as the SUVs ample cargo space and abundant tech features. The V90 wagon received kudos for the impressive interior, massive cargo space, and exquisite exterior styling. Finally, the cross country version of the V90 was admired for its luxurious design and enhanced practicality.

The Editor’s Choice awards honor vehicles that Car and Driver leaders would recommend to their family and friends based on inherent value, how well it fulfills its intended mission relative to its segment competitors, and how engaging it is from behind the wheel.

“For the experts at a place as trusted as Car and Driver to give five Volvo cars their Editor’s Choice award is a very big deal,” said Anders Gustafsson, Senior Vice President Americas and President and CEO Volvo Car USA. “Now anyone considering a new luxury car should absolutely look at a Volvo.”

Further praise came from AutoTrader who named the XC90 as a Must-Have Certified Pre-Owned Car. 2016 to 2018 model years qualified for the “Good as New: 10 Best Luxury CPO Cars for 2019” list. Each Certified Volvo must pass over 170 points during the certification process, have less than 80,000 miles, and feature a detailed CARFAX history report.

“When consumers choose a Certified by Volvo certified preowned vehicle, they can be confident they’re fully protected,” said Rick Bryant, vice president Sales Operations, Volvo Car USA. “It’s great that Autotrader has recognized the XC90 as a must-have car.”

Volvo has experienced an 11.3% growth in global sales during the first two months of the year, as the early increase Y-O-Y was led by the performance of the XC60, XC40, and the XC90. In addition to the SUV lineup’s output, the S60 became the first American built Volvo, which is manufactured in South Carolina.
