The 2013 Phantom: Rolls Royce is Still The Car of Kings

Phantom Evolution

Phantom has always been aptly named. Like a spooky apparition it has disappeared and re-appeared numerous times over the last century. Through it all, the executive flagship has proudly displayed the signature Spirit of Ecstasy hood icon—a reassuring detail for every Rolls-Royce diehard.

As the first Rolls produced by German engineers after a century of British ownership, the Phantom defines the upper-crust marque as influenced by the house of BMW. How have they done?

The system also ties in with mobile phone apps like Pandora and Facebook, among others, allowing them to be operated using either voice commands or the beautiful included LCD touch screen.

For those who opt in for XM or use your own music playlist, your tunes can be enjoyed using the surround sound system by Mark Levinson, which boasts nineteen individual speakers. Front seats are both heated and ventilated, the second row of seats is heated along with the steering wheel, and Smart Access keyless entry is supported with a quick push-button engine startup.

Kids will be especially big fans of the dual-screen entertainment system. Both back rows are allowed wireless headphones for enjoyment of whatever is playing. The screen also supports dual-sourcing, meaning two different devices can be plugged into the screen at one time – a DVD players and a game console, for instance.

2013 Cayenne GTS: Porsche Sticks to its Roots

Crossover seems to be the exciting new frontier for every car manufacturer these days, and Porsche has actually managed to superbly blend utility, beauty and power for the enthusiast looking for a family vehicle in the 2013 Cayenne GTS. PSM also works with adaptive cruise control to detect vehicles ahead. If the distance between the Porsche and another vehicle decreases, PSM automatically readies the brakes for quick application. Volvo Takes Aim: The 2013 Volvo S60 Runs with BMW’s 328xi and Audi’s A4 for Thousands Less

When Volvo unveiled its new S60 sport sedan, it teased the public by claiming to introduce the “naughtiest Volvo ever.”

Under the Hood

The secret is that the seductive S60 performs like the proverbial naughty librarian: quiet, smooth in all the right places and equipped with either a 5-cylinder 300 HP turbocharged engine that has more horses than its BMW 328i or Audi A4 rivals. The BMW falls short by 10 HP, and the Audi lags behind by a full 39 fewer ponies. Bottom line: the S60 rivals its Bavarian luxury brethren yet the Swedish rubber hits the road at a much lower price.

In addition, Volvo added some clever transmission tweaks for 2013 to enhance the S60’s performance. It added shiny pistons, a re-engineered crank, a new software package and new overboost for an extra burst of torque when you hit the throttle. The new software enables quicker and more precise shifts and all the improvements add up to a zero to 60 shot of 5.93 seconds.

Comfort and Safety

Birkenstock-like comfort by no means translates into cheap and tacky, but rather transforms into “Scandinavian Chic,” once you enter the privacy of the cabin. Brushed metal and “supremely comfortable seats” which out-perform BMW and Audi as the “segment’s ergonomic benchmark,” communicate a prestige feel. When it comes to the inside cabin feel during the drive, it is quiet as a library except for the tunes you might be rocking on your HiFi sound system.

The infotainment system delivers Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and City Safety is standard. City Safety employs a camera and laser to scan traffic and moving objects in front of the car. This reduces fender benders considerably and pedestrian accidents significantly and tested at 25 percent greater efficacy than BMW and Audi equivalents.

Confident and Smooth Drive

Driving the naughty introvert has its rewards in terms of what one reviewer described as “extremely confident road manners in all driving situations.” This view is attributable perhaps to the S60’s standard computerized torque vectoring that intuitively controls braking on inside wheels and releases power to the outside wheel. Compared to the driving prowess of the Audi A4, one reviewer commented that the Audi was “less predictable and less composed.” Known for its luxury ride, the Volvo handles rough roads smoothly.

Great Value

The Volvo S60 delivers an excellent value, especially in its T5 AWD variant, which will give added traction and control. The Audi A4 Quattro is about $800 dollars higher, and the BMW 328xi costs nearly $5K more than the Volvo. If you compare the German cars to the Volvo, feature for feature, the numbers are even more telling. The Audi costs over $1,000 more and the Bimmer comes in at $4k to $5K higher than the quiet Swedish bombshell.

This is the first car to get Jaguar’s new supercharged 3.0 liter V6. While other automakers have opted for turbocharging, Jaguar utilizes a supercharger to avoid the telltale turbo-lag. This results an engine that provides smooth power delivery comparable to a V8 with nearly identical performance, along with better fuel economy and front-to-rear weight balance.

The new Instinctive All Wheel Drive system provides better traction in bad weather, while being tuned to improve dry weather performance as well, maintaining the feel and driving dynamics of a rear-wheel-drive car. It even helps the car move faster, putting more power through the front wheels at launch and then to the rear as the weight shifts under acceleration.

The XF

The Jaguar XF delivers the driving experience and many design features of the XJ in a smaller package, only trading some rear seat and trunk room for even better handling. While many automakers aim to clock the fastest time on the Nurburging, this sedan goes one step further. Last year, proving it’s speed at the 24-Hour Race, the XF took home the trophy.

For the most part, the major differences between the XF variants are the engine options. The base XF get a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, producing 240 horsepower that, thanks to the lightweight chassis, allows the car to go from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. Not enough power? The 3.0 liter V6 option produces 340 hp and the supercharged 5.0 liter V8 bumps that power figure to 470 hp. The XFR gets an engine tuned to produce 510 hp with an XFR-S model expected this Spring at 550 hp..

The XK

The Jaguar XK follows a long line of fantastic grand touring cars including legends like the E-type and XK120. Like the XF, the XK is available with a 5.0 liter V8 in standard and supercharged versions, while the XKR delivers more power and better handling.

At the top of the lineup is the XKR-S. It gets a version of the supercharged V8 producing 550 hp and 502 lb.-ft. of torque, as well as a race suspension to provide supercar-like performance. Since its creation, this car was designed to do a sub-8-minute lap on the Nurburgring. The XKR-S was also planned from the start to retain its ride quality, making it one of the few cars in this class that is still comfortable in real-world conditions. Like the rest of the XK lineup, the XKR-S has a suspension that can be adjusted on the fly to provide more comfort or sharper handling. However it is missing the garishness of most tuner luxury cars; to the casual observer, the only tip-offs to this car’s performance are the small hood inlets and the badging.

If you’re yearning for a convertible, any of the XK trims come available with a drop top. The weight and structural rigidity penalties are very minor, giving all these cars the same performance experience as their hardtop counterparts..
